Media and Communications Officer – Conakry

About the role

The Media and Communications Officer will work under the Chief of Mission in Conakry, Guinea, supporting IOM’s internal and external communication activities. The role focuses on raising awareness about migration issues, especially irregular migration and voluntary returns, and promoting IOM’s image across media channels.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate the country‑level awareness‑raising strategy and organise outreach activities.
• Provide media and communication updates to the Chief of Mission and programme managers.
• Participate in inter‑agency working groups and share information across agencies.
• Design and implement information campaigns for diverse target groups.
• Develop cost projections and timelines for communication initiatives.
• Manage social‑media channels (Twitter, Facebook, IOM website) to increase visibility.
• Capture field material, including photographs, for donor and government promotion.
• Ensure all multimedia materials have proper consent documentation.
• Collaborate with HQ Media and Communication Division on news stories and global campaigns.
• Support website updates, reporting, infographics and situation reports.
• Contribute to the development of IOM’s communications strategy on irregular migration.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in Mass Communication, Journalism, Public Information or related field with at least two years of relevant experience, or a bachelor’s degree with four years of experience.
• Proven experience in media and communications, including writing and reporting in international or crisis contexts.
• Strong organisational and editorial skills, ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
• Fluency in English and French (both oral and written); additional UN language or West African language is an advantage.

Required skills

• Proficiency with social‑media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook.
• Experience managing website content and updates.
• Use of digital tools for consent management, e.g., Community Response App.
