Specialist Mining Engineer (Design)

About the role

Rio Tinto is seeking a Specialist Mining Engineer (Design) to lead the development, implementation and optimisation of mine designs throughout the mining lifecycle. You will create safe, efficient and cost‑effective mine layouts, infrastructure plans and operational strategies using advanced software, engineering principles, industry best practices and Rio Tinto standards.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement technical systems and processes for mine design on site.
• Produce detailed designs and drawings for open‑pit stages, waste‑rock storage facilities (development and final), haul roads, stockpiles and operational development layouts.
• Collaborate closely with operations, Site MTS, Life‑of‑Mine teams and specialist short‑ and medium‑term planners to align designs with production targets and safety standards.
• Contribute to critical mine development and design strategies for the Simandou iron ore deposit.
• Work within a 4‑weeks‑on, 2‑weeks‑off rotation schedule.

Required profile

• Qualified mining engineer with experience in mine design and planning.
• Strong understanding of safety, efficiency and cost‑effectiveness principles in mining.
• Proven ability to work collaboratively across engineering disciplines and operational teams.
• Willingness to work on a rotating onsite schedule.

Required skills

• Proficiency with advanced mine design software.
• Knowledge of Rio Tinto (RT) standards and industry best practices.
• Ability to develop detailed technical drawings and layouts.
