Specialist Mining Engineer (Design)

About the role

Rio Tinto is seeking a Specialist Mining Engineer (Design) to lead the development, implementation and optimisation of mine designs throughout the mining lifecycle. The role focuses on creating safe, efficient and cost‑effective surface mine layouts, infrastructure plans and operational strategies for the Simandou iron‑ore project.

Key responsibilities

• Develop detailed surface mine designs, including pit layouts, haul‑road networks, waste‑rock storage facilities and stockpiles.
• Produce detailed drawings for open‑pit stages and operational development designs.
• Collaborate with other engineering disciplines, operations teams and management to ensure designs meet production targets, safety standards and regulatory requirements.
• Implement and maintain technical systems and processes for mine design on site.
• Work closely with the Superintendent Mine Planning and the Mine Technical Services team.

Required profile

• Qualified mining engineer with experience in surface mine design.
• Ability to work on‑site and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
• Strong understanding of safety, cost‑effectiveness and regulatory compliance in mining projects.

Required skills

• Proficiency with advanced mine design software.
• Knowledge of engineering principles and industry best practices.
• Familiarity with Rio Tinto (RT) standards and guidelines.
