Senior Geotechnical Engineer

About the role

Rio Tinto is seeking a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to support the Simandou iron‑ore project in Guinea. The role involves building and coordinating a geotechnical team, providing operational support, and managing geotechnical hazards on a fly‑in/fly‑out schedule.

Key responsibilities

• Provide geotechnical support to the Simandou mine operation and coordinate with Mine Engineers, Hydrogeologists, Geologists and other stakeholders.
• Proactively manage geotechnical hazards and risks in line with the Slope and Dump Management Plan.
• Design, install and manage slope monitoring systems (radars, prisms, InSAR, TDR, inclinometers).
• Supervise geotechnical monitoring equipment installation and maintain hazard maps.
• Coach, train and lead the geotechnical engineering team.
• Conduct operational design reviews of pits and dumps using RocScience or similar tools.

Required profile

• Degree in Geosciences or a related discipline.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in open‑pit geotechnical monitoring and risk control.
• Strong safety focus and ability to influence and collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.
• Excellent analytical, communication and leadership skills.

Required skills

• Geotechnical monitoring systems (radars, prisms, InSAR, TDR, inclinometers).
• Slope and dump hazard identification and mitigation.
• Use of RocScience or comparable design software.
• Open‑pit geotechnical engineering and water risk management.
