Specialist Early Ore – Mining Operations

About the role

Rio Tinto is seeking a Specialist Early Ore to lead safe and efficient early ore activities within the Simandou Mining Operations. The role oversees screening, crushing, ore haulage, material movement and train loading, ensuring production aligns with short‑term and medium‑term plans.

Key responsibilities

• Lead safety as a core operational outcome, applying disciplined risk management.
• Direct all early ore operations including screening, crushing, haulage, material movement and train loading.
• Provide clear leadership to contractors operating mobile and fixed early ore assets.
• Integrate early ore and material movement activities into the two‑week operational plan.
• Monitor contractor performance across production, safety, asset care, haulage efficiency and cost.
• Collaborate with Maintenance and Asset Management to ensure equipment availability.
• Track throughput, availability, utilisation and quality of screening, crushing, haulage and loading systems.
• Drive continuous improvement in plant performance, haulage efficiency and material flow.
• Support commissioning, ramp‑up and optimisation of early ore infrastructure.
• Contribute to long‑term early ore strategies, including plant configuration and capacity increases.
• Build strong relationships with Rail teams to support train loading and dispatch.
• Coach and mentor national supervisors and engineers through visible field leadership.

Required profile

• Strong safety leadership with a visible field presence.
• Several years of experience in early ore operations.
• Proven ability to manage contractor performance and operating discipline.
• Experience working closely with Maintenance, Asset Management and Planning teams.
• Ability to develop strong working relationships with rail operations.
• Demonstrated coaching and mentoring capabilities.

Required skills

• Experience operating screening and crushing plants.
• Knowledge of haulage fleet management and material movement logistics.
• Familiarity with train loading procedures and coordination.
