Port Dispatch Manager

About the role

Rio Tinto is looking for a Port Dispatch Manager in Conakry, Guinea, to plan and coordinate the operations of the iron ore export terminal and the general cargo terminal, including the related maritime operations. The role covers planning, resource allocation, team management, reporting and performance targets.

Key responsibilities

• Plan and schedule iron ore export and general cargo operations, coordinating maritime operations for efficient, safe port use.
• Plan and coordinate the use of cranes, train unloaders, belt conveyors, stackers-reclaimers and ship loaders to reduce idle time.
• Assign staff and equipment according to ship schedules, handling needs and equipment availability.
• Supervise operations and handle exceptions such as equipment breakdowns or bad weather.
• Manage the Operations Coordination and Dispatch Centre team, including performance criteria, roles and incentives.
• Organise continuous training and development of staff.
• Coordinate with other departments and with port authorities, the port authority and the pilot service on safety and regulations.
• Collect and analyse production data, prepare loading and discharge plans, reports and regular updates to management.
• Ensure financial control of operations and projects, and meet performance targets set by management.

Required profile

• University degree or equivalent, preferably in port operations, transport management, logistics or a related field.
• At least five years of experience in port operations, ideally in a major port.
• Good knowledge of loading/unloading, storage yard management, warehousing and solid bulk, general cargo and containers.
• Experience in complex project management and stakeholder management; African experience is an advantage.
• Fluent English; French or Chinese is an advantage.
• Availability to be based in Guinea.

• Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
• Strong organisation, planning and decision-making abilities.
• Good understanding of railway operations and integrated supply chain constraints.
